Christmas day 2015 - on the way to the bakers

Bob's year 2016
Life in France

Bobby has had an eventful year with more health problems than he deserves. He continues to make the daily walk to the bakers in the morning although there is more carrying involved than actual walking. Because we now take so long (45 minutes to an hour) we see a lot more people - most of them wanting to say good morning (to Bobby). I don't know whether I would be allowed into the bakers without him. He normally gets his ears twiddled and a big kiss from Michelle, while any customers have to wait. It doesn't really matter as the vast majority of the other customers say bonjour to Bobby and give him a pat.

One remarkable thing is that Bobby has grown really long hair this year - perhaps he is expecting a harsh winter!

He's actually not doing too badly for a fifteen year old, and he continues to make us new friends wherever we go.

He even got the staff at the vets trained and calling him their mascot after he had a short spell there.

Anyway, here are a few images of Bobby and his friends during the year.

Health issues:

Bobby has suffered with a few health issues this year, mainly in the second half of the year.

Although he had been panting a lot during the warm summer we didn't suspect too much, but when we took him to the vet in August for some antibiotics to counter a tummy bug the vet gave him a good once over (and an x-ray) and she found that he has an enlarged heart. After Bobby started on the pills to ease his condition it made a huge difference and he rarely suffers from the same level of breathlessness. He is on a light dose at the moment so we have scope to increase the dose if future needs require it.

In September he had a bad case of pancreatitis which left him with some liver damage. He spent six days at the vet on a drip to stabilise him before we took over with a daily dose of magic potion to help his liver. The effect on his liver is measured in a blood test. The very first test gave such high readings that they were off the scale. It was a fraught time for us as the vet warned us that he might not pull through. He surprised everybody and is still making steady improvements. During his time at the vets he somehow trained the staff to run around after him and we keep hearing snippets when we take him back - like the assistant who took to hand feeding him to keep him happy.

We have been warned that another dose of pancreatitis could strike at any time so we are being very careful with him.

Come October we were back at the vets again because Bobby suddenly went lame in one of his back legs. One more x-ray investigation later and we discovered that although we thought he was struggling because of arthritis in his legs, his real problem is arthritis at two different points in his back. The vet thinks he must have tweaked something in one of his many falls leading to his temporary (thank goodness) lameness.

Bobby can't walk far nowadays but he still goes for as many walks it is just that he is carried for the majority of the time. He prefers to be carried and puts on the air of it being his right place. However we do insist on a minimum distance each outing - often pulled along by the lure of a chestnut or other treat.

Snow to start the year: As always Bobby loved the snow.
Birthday boy: 15 years old and still a puppy at heart - even if the legs give him away. Bobby received a special birthday cake from Michelle at the bakers.
The bakers: Bobby still comes on the morning walk to the bakers each day, although he is carried for most of the walk. Indeed we're not sure whether we would be served if we went without him. Each morning he gets a big kiss and has his ears twiddled by Michelle. Not quite the same attitude as the bakers back in England.
Bath time:it may not be Bobby's favourite event but he does look wonderful and feel very silky afterwards.
Snoozing: Bobby continues to demonstrate that snoozing can be a year round art form if you put in enough effort.
Some of the many walks in the area.
Mont Beuvray: Having a "Grand site de France" on your doorstep is very useful. Bobby loves it up there and most of the year round you can drive to the top so we go there every few days. It is always several degrees cooler up there (being over 400m or 1300 feet higher than our house), which is quite useful in the summer. Here are a few pictures from some of our walks up there.
Etang la Goulette: is small lake in the hills not far from us which is also a favourite cool summer walk.
Mont Rome: is a favourite picnic spot when out in the vinyards searching for essentials (for us that is).
And there's always the lane at the bottom of our garden.
And here are a few other places we've been for walks.
Visitors and Friends.
Nellie and Daisy: Bobby had lady friends (Nellie and Daisy) to stay for a couple of weeks in the summer. .
Blue came to stay for a week in August.
Ischia came by for the afternoon when we hosted a walk at the top of Mont Beuvray.
ET: That is ET as in ET the extra terrestrial. ET is another resident of Saint Léger and we walk past his home on the way into town each morning. Whenever they meet up ET loves to moither Bobby. As ET's owners work with us in the Comité des Fêtes organising events the two of them meet up quite often.
Mallo is one of our neighbours cats. He spends a lot of time in our garden listening to the molehills. He has caught moles before and taken them home as gifts for his owners - but there's no evidence that he's caught any of ours so far. Once upon a time Bobby would have chased him out of the garden but nowadays he is willing to tolerate Mallo most of the time.
A surprise buddy: The resident cat at the hotel du Morvan. Since it was a kitten it has got on well with Bobby. On occasions they have been laid asleep virtually nose to nose. It used to follow Bobby around the town square in the days when that was Bobby's last walk of the night.
And a little story from late April.
Duck sausage.
We met Jean-Loup for the first time in late April. Anne goes to gym with his wife (who is a senior archaeologist at Bibracte) and she invited us for an evening. While we were still in their doorway meeting and greeting, Bobby wandered off between our legs. A few minutes later he re-appeared and Anne (our host) said that Bobby had a sausage. It didn’t make any sense but when I looked I wondered where he’d got the dog toy from – then I realised it was a real sausage! Because our hosts do not have any pets they had left the sausage in a basket on the kitchen floor - and Bobby had accepted it as a welcome gift. We prised it out of his mouth and gave it back and I’m sure that it re-appeared (sliced up) a little later in the evening as it was just the same colour as the duck sausage they served as a speciality of Anne's home region of France...
